About the Dukes

Alexandria Dukes is a Rugby Club that has successfully completed its first year in the NSW Suburban Rugby Competition Division 6.

The Alexandria Dukes aspires to be a community and social rugby club providing playing opportunities for all in an atmosphere that is enjoyable, friendly, welcoming and respectful.  The majority of our members reside in the local area, with the balance primarily working in the CBD.

The Suburb of Alexandria, which our club name is derived, is named so in 1868 after separating from Waterloo.  Waterloo was named after the Battle of Waterloo.  Many of the streets, parks and buildings still hold the names from that battle.

The Commander of that battle and where the name the "Dukes" comes from, is the Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of WellingtonKGGCBGCHPCFRS (1 May 1769 – 14 September 1852).  He was a soldier and statesman, and one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century.

He is often referred to as the "Iron Duke", which is where our club rooms, The Iron Duke Hotel, take its name from.

The clubs coat of arms is a variation of the Duke of Wellington's Coat of arms, which has the Red stripes (When on a coat of arms means Warrior, Martyr, Military Strength), the Gold (When on a coat of arms meaning Generosity) and the Lions (The symbol representing a great Warrior).

The Motto "Para Bellum", or in english "Prepare for War" also lends itself from the Iron Duke after his long service in the armed forces.  The Iron Duke was the master of both defence and attack.  Traits which can be directly transferred to the Rugby pitch to be successful.
Rugby is it's own 80 minute war.
As a club in it's infancy, we are fortunate to have 8 committed sponsors for season 2012
Mission

Our aim at Alexandria Dukes RFC is to create an environment where rugby can be played and enjoyed by players and spectators of all ages.
We aim to be recognised as a leading club in NSW Suburban Rugby Union as we strive for excellence not only on the pitch but also through our coaching, volunteering, involvement with schools and reaching out to the local community.
We want to provide facilities and coaching of the highest standard to ensure that those playing and watching are proud to be a part of Alexandria Dukes RFC.
At Alexandria Dukes RFC we want to nurture our players and ensure excellent retention levels by developing a club that has good facilities, outstanding coaching and a fun social environment.
The era of professional rugby is here to stay and whilst we must embrace the modern way, through a professional and business like administration it is essential that we remain focussed on being a “real” rugby club for our players, former players, all Alexandria Dukes RFC members, families and spectators.
